How to become and stay productive throughout the year
For me personally, the start of a new year is the perfect time to take a closer look at my daily habits. I’m a creature of habit and I put a lot of thought into my routines. So I’d like to go over what’s working, what’s not (leave those behind) and look at ways to get more out of my day.
I find that productivity has played a major role in setting myself up for success. Now don’t get me wrong, a little downtime is great (and very necessary) but I do feel most accomplished when I get to cross things off my list – hinting at the first productivity tip. So I wanted to share my 3 tips for increasing your productivity, to make sure that we all crush 2022!
Daily to-do’s
This may sound like a no-brainer and you’ve probably heard it before too, but it actually does the trick for me. Every morning, I sit down and write my to-do’s for the day. Yes, even on weekends ;). Physically checking off the boxes on your to-do list is a very satisfying and motivating process.
There are multiple ways to go about this. You can do it digitally (there are many apps available but Word or Excel would work fine too), or go oldschool like me and use pen and paper. Get yourself a nice looking notebook to make it more aesthetically appealing. Write your list at night to go to bed relaxed or do it while drinking your morning coffee.
Time Blocks
When my daily to-do list still doesn’t get me going I try to schedule everything into time blocks. You can use (google) calendar or, again, simply write it down using pen and paper. Adding a deadline might give you that final little push you need to get things done. Setting a timer could help focus.
Important here is that you make time for breaks too. Scheduling an eight hour day without any breaks is overwhelming and you won’t be able to focus for that long. I try to plan a break every two hours or so.
Eliminate distractions
Your surroundings (phone, messy room etc.) can be distracting you from getting all your work and other to-do’s done, especially when working from home. To prevent this as much as possible I’d like to keep my space as clean as I can. Try to spend a short amount of time (like 10 minutes or so) to tidy up before you get started on your other tasks. Lay out your necessities (water, pens etc.) too.
Now, this one will differ from person to person, but I’d like to work in complete silence. No music and no news on the tv in the background. However, I know that for others it works perfectly fine and even increases their productivity when they listen to music.
And this also brings me to my final point: Figure out what works for you. It’s not a one size fits all concept. What might work for me, won’t necessarily work for you. But I do hope that my 3 tips for increasing your productivity will help you on those days that your productivity level hits an all time low.
